Our History and Philosophy

Loyn + Co Architects is a pioneering architectural practice with a long-standing commitment to promoting excellence in design and caring for people, place, and the environment. Our story began in 1987 when our founder, Chris Loyn, set up the practice. Chris' early years were spent in the family home in Llanishen, Cardiff, and it was here that his passion for architecture took root. In 1992, Chris founded Loyn + Co Architects, and in the same year, our first commission for a new dwelling was a successful renovation of a semi-detached Victorian house in Llanishen. This project received the Lord Mayor's Civic Award for the 'Best Example of an Individual House or Extension'. This connection with site, history, time, and place has remained a constant theme throughout our growth and expansion.

Design for Public Use

As our reputation grew, so did our client base and range of commissions. In 1995, we were commissioned by St Donats Arts Centre to design a modern, multifunctional arts centre for UWC Atlantic College at the heart of the college campus in Llantwit Major. This marked a significant step into design for public use, which has become a significant aspect of our practice.
