Gaunt Francis Architects is a creative commercial design studio that prides itself on blending business acumen and technical excellence with design creativity. Established in 1997, the practice has built a reputation for delivering award-winning projects throughout the UK and abroad from its offices in London and Cardiff. We celebrate collaborative working and have no single designer or design style. Our core philosophy is that of a collective endeavour, where the collective strength of our diverse talents, skills, and expertises come together to create truly exceptional designs.
Philosophy
At Gaunt Francis Architects, we believe that architecture is about much more than creating a functional, built environment. The skill lies in how the design process can add value to that functionality by producing great places and buildings that are beautiful, sustainable, and maximize the client's investment. We take the approach that the most valuable compositions are often the simplest. Our philosophy is centered around creating great places that enrich our lives, lift our spirits, and provide a sense of security, familiarity, and belonging.
Our Approach
Our approach is to develop a deep understanding of our clients' business plans and objectives, drilling down to the core of their modus operandi. We then work closely with them to identify the key issues and challenges they face, and develop solutions that cater specifically to their needs. We prioritize collaboration, believing that the best architectural ideas often emerge through studio dialogue and working closely with clients at the workface. Our design leaders are also coordinators and inspirers, and we recognize the value of humility in collaboration. We lead the design process, but we also recognize that the best architectural ideas may not always be our own.
Studio
Our studio design thinking is centered around collaborative working, with no hierarchy in our office layout. Senior staff occupy the same space as junior staff, and design ideas are freely expressed and challenged. We encourage freehand drawing and a creative working environment that fosters innovative thinking. We use electronic tools for tasks that require precision and speed, but we also recognize the value of traditional methods, such as hand-drawn sketches, for initial analysis and first thoughts.
People
Our practice is composed of talented architects, designers, and project managers who share a passion for creating great places and buildings.
