Providing rare and out of print books for scholars and enthusiasts

Janette Ray Rare and Out of Print Books is a specialist bookshop established in 1996, located in York, England. We specialize in the sale and purchase of rare and out-of-print books on architecture, design, gardens, photography, and fine art, mainly published between 1800 and 1950. Our stock includes original drawings and photographs.

With over two decades of experience in the rare book trade, Janette Ray Rare and Out of Print Books has grown from a small, private venture to a reputable and respected business.

Our Shop

Our shop is located at 8 Bootham, York, YO30 7BL, just five minutes from York Minster. The building has its own unique character, with original fireplaces and wooden beams. Members of the York Artworkers Association played a crucial role in the renovation of the building, contributing to the creation of this lovely shop.

History of the Business

Janette Ray established the business in 1995, with a focus on architecture, design, photography, and landscape subjects. As the business grew, it soon outgrew its initial premises. In 2000, Janette Ray purchased the current location, a medieval timber-framed building, which was internally ruinous at the time. Renovation revealed the original features, and the space was transformed into a charming shop.
